MHFA for Schools and Colleges has been designed especially with schools and colleges in mind.

It is a brand new addition to Youth Mental Health First Aid range of training. We are the first training company offering this course in the South West.

This training will contribute directly to:

  1. Improving a practical set of skills of your staff in their safeguarding capacity;
  2. Exceeding the Independent Schools Inspectorate or Ofsted requirements in the welfare, health and safety of pupils;
  3. Having a positive impact on pupils’ emotional wellbeing, early intervention and support.

What will I learn?

The course gives a deeper understanding to the complex issues relating to young people and mental health.
It helps people recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health problems.
It enables a young person to access appropriate professional help.

Did you know that 20% of children have a mental health problem in any given year, and about 10% at any one time? One in ten children between the ages of 1 and 15 has a mental health disorder.

Topics covered on the course:

  1. What is mental health and mental ill health?
  2. Stigma and discrimination
  3. The five steps of mental health first aid
  4. Depression
  5. Suicide
  6. Non judgemental listening skills
  7. Anxiety
  8. Self-harm
  9. Eating disorders
  10. Psychosis

Similar to a role of the traditional First Aider in your school or college, there is an urgent need for Mental Health First Aiders who will be confident and competent in providing help on a first aid basis to anyone experiencing poor mental health or emotional wellbeing.

As a one-day course, it fits perfectly into schools’ inset training days and busy private school timetables, making it accessible for teaching staff across sectors. The session will be a mix of presentation, group discussions and group work activities.
